Itaipu: A Journey of Cooperation and Engineering

A history of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant dates back to the 60s, when Brazil and Paraguay began exploring the potential of the Paraná River for energy generation.

Then, in 1973, both countries signed the Itaipu Treaty, laying the foundations for the construction of the plant.

Thus, work began in 1975, involving consortiums of companies from both sides of the border.

Construction took around 10 years and was carried out by consortiums of companies from both countries.

So it was a monumental engineering challenge, with thousands of workers. And, in 1984, Itaipu began generating energy, becoming one of the largest plants in the world, economically benefiting Brazil and Paraguay and contributing to clean and renewable energy.
